In tune with: April Jai

What’s your name and who are you?

Hey, I’m April Jai. I’m an independent singer songwriter originally from Scotland but based in London. I make sad/chill pop music but I do have the occasional banger, my sound is like depression music with a hint of badass!

We’ve asked you to create a playlist of tracks that have inspired your musical journey so far, can you tell us a bit about it?

Something that I think you’ll notice immediately is that all the artists on the playlist are women, it was a conscious choice as I honestly get the most inspiration from my fellow female singer songwriters. My inspirations are ever changing so there’s a huge eclectic mix on the playlist from what inspired me as a kid/teen to what inspires me now. You’ve got my favourite song of all time on there “All Too Well” and in general I could’ve probably added another 10 Taylor Swift songs to the playlist. She’s the reason I picked up the guitar and I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without her music growing up.Other than that I’ve got some artists that were huge inspirations for me as a kid: Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain. I’ve also got my latest hype track on there for when I feel like my mental health needs a boost (Rush by Ayra Starr) and in general some of my all time favourite sad songs (which was the hardest thing to narrow down).

If the playlist you created had to be the soundtrack to a film, what film would that be?

Oooh, I love this question! Any coming of age movie or a movie about dealing with mental health issues in general. I grew up struggling with a lot of mental health issues and it’s probably why I find a lot of comfort in sad songs.

What do you imagine most people are doing whilst they listen to your music?

I get told a lot that my music is great to drive to, which I love. In general when you look at my back catalogue, no one is dancing to my music in clubs hahaha. Mostly I think of a chill night journaling with candles on or driving while it rains outside is the perfect setting for my music.

How would you describe your music in three words?

Honest, introspective, emotional

What does the rest of 2023 hold for you?

You can expect a lot more new music and some really cool shows that I can’t wait to announce! Apart from that I’m just here for the wild ride, so many things can change so quickly and I’m excited to see what 2023 throws at me.
